There is a time in life where everybody
will experience a significant decreased in hormone
levels and as a consequence we will become more
vulnerable. Around the middle age we experience
in our bodies a significant hormone changes
called menopause and andropause. For women the
symptoms of decreasing the hormone levels could
means hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings,
headaches anxiety, irritability, dry skin, weight
increase, lipid changes, insomnia, painful intercourse
and many other discomforts.
Most men do not even know that this
hormonal change exists. All they notice is a
general lack of energy and vitality. They feel
tired, they nap more often, they became less
interested on their lives, their sexual libido
decreased but more important they are ashamed
to bring it up.
Each person is very unique in their
way they experience this normal stages of life.
As well as the expression of the symptoms are
very different and unique, the treatments also
should be individualized. Every human being
manufactures hormones in a different rate and
modalities so the treatment should be very specific
and appropriate.
When we talk about Hormone Replacement
Therapy we basically are talking about estrogen,
progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone).
This does not means that we should forget about
the thyroid, the adrenal, the growth hormone
and many other substances and hormones that
place an important role in our well-being.
Traditionally, the way of treating
the menopause and the andropause has been done
with pharmaceuticals substances that simulates
the hormone effects. Most of these products
are unnatural hormones, unnatural at least to
the human body. Although the synthetic hormone
replacement therapy can eliminate some of the
distressing symptoms of menopause, they do not "replace" the
loss of natural hormones. The physiology and
the bio-chemistry of the unnatural way of replacing
the declining hormones is insufficient and inappropriate.
Fortunately there are different ways
to respond to this normal changes in this stage
of our life. The Bio-identical Hormones have
a chemical structure that is identical to the
natural hormones produced by our body. They
are general made from plant oils such Mexican
yams. Phytoestrogen are plant derive compounds
that sometimes mimics the natural estrogen.
There are four families of phytoestrogen and
the soy derived products are one of the best
known sources of phytoestrogen. There are also
other herbal products that can help balancing
our chemical changes such the black cohosh,
don quai, licorice root, chashberry, valerian
root, saw palmetto, choline, ginko biloba, ginseg,
EPA (eicosapentanoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic
acid), and many other ones.
The conventional way of Hormone Replacement
Therapy needs a different understanding. There
are serious misconceptions; there is ignorance,
lack of training, and powerful economical benefits
that interferes with the change. There is confusion
in the minds of the lay public and in the medical
community but we need a contemporary response
to the challenges not only of the baby boom
generation but to the human rights to have a
healthier life.
It is time of us to educate ourselves
not only on the natural chemical substances
that we can take to help with our deficiencies
but also with the knowledge and understanding
that we can empower ourselves to utilized our
infinite pharmaceutical inner body resources.
We can self deliver our own pharmaceutical
compounds that our body possess in an adequate
dose and strength but without side effects.
